San Giovanni in Loffa

Located in a panoramic position on Monte Loffa, this church is said to be the oldest in the western part of the Lessinia region, as is indicated by the year 1131 that appears on the portal. Historical documents make references to it starting from 1454, which seems to indicate that it may have been built as an act of devotion by the aristocratic Maffei family of Verona. The church is Romanesque in style and has a wooden truss roof; inside the church there are three multi-coloured marble altars, and an altarpiece with the Saints John the Baptist, Martial and Urban, along with a stone sarcophagus, dated 1523, which is the tomb of Guido Antonio Maffei. On the left side of the building there is a bell-tower with a square sectioned trunk, and mullioned windows, built from uniform-sized stone ashlars.
